Smithfield market is the largest wholesale meat market in the UK. It is also one of the largest of its
kind in Europe.
Smithfield is packed with nearly 1000 years of history, and consists of three grade 2 listed
buildings. It is situated within the Square Mile of the City of London, and has been the site of a
livestock market since the 10th century.
It now boasts state of the art, high tech storage, receipt and despatch of meat and poultry.
Smithfield Market has grown and evolved through the centuries, and these changes can now be
seen in the latest regulations and hygiene standards adhered to by each stall.
One part of Smithfield that has never changed is the courteous, polite and good humour that the
stall holders have for their customers on a daily basis.
